Insurers Respond to Tropical Storm Imelda

09/23/2019

The remnants of Tropical Storm Imelda brought more than 30 inches of rains to portions of southeast Texas causing rising flood waters, reminiscent of Hurricane Harvey.

Insurance companies are ready to take your calls and have deployed claims teams to severely damaged areas to help customers through the claims process. As of this morning, over 10,000 vehicle flood claims have been reported in Southeast Texas. Homeowners are still assessing damages caused by flooding but damage estimates will likely reach well into the billions of dollars.

Damage to a home, a renter’s personal property, and business, resulting from a flood, is typically covered under the FEMA National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policies, if the homeowner, renter, or business has purchased one. Vehicles damaged or destroyed by either wind or flooding are covered under the optional comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy.

As flood waters begin receding and it’s safe to return home, beginning the claims process can feel overwhelming. Start by calling your agent or carrier to report your claim and review your coverages. It’s also important to start mitigating damages to your property. Document damages by taking photos and keeping receipts associated with the cleanup or repairs.

Texans are resilient, but ICT warns -- avoid being a victim of contractor fraud. This year, the Texas Legislature passed HB2102 which mandates that customers must pay their deductible. Contractors who absorb or include the deductible as part of the repair estimate are committing fraud. Homeowners need to be aware of this new law to protect themselves from unscrupulous contractors.
