Student Spotlight - Olivia Bachelet
St. Mary’s University San Antonio, Texas
Major: Finance & Risk Management
Graduation: May 2020
Olivia Bachelet has a message she wants to share, “Insurance is a whole new world and it’s not what people think!” A senior at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, studying finance & risk management and captain of the women’s soccer team, Olivia is one of ICT’s 2019 Scholarship recipients.
Originally pursuing a degree in sports management, she was invited by a friend to attend a Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) meeting. GIS is a college organization designed to promote, encourage and sustain student interest in insurance, risk management and actuarial science as professions. Skeptical at first, but thinking it might be an interesting presentation, Olivia joined her friend and that evening was the turning point in her college career. This left back defender on the soccer field learned about commercial lines, surplus lines and that everything can be insured. She had no idea a dancer’s feet or a pitcher’s arm could be insured. “This was not the sitting behind your desk job she remembers Mr. Incredible agonizing over in the Disney movie,” quipped Olivia!
Her motivation and determination are equally impressive both on the field and in the classroom. “Helping people, leading by example, good time management, integrity, strong values, organized, and high expectation of self” are traits she holds in high esteem for herself and those around her. Olivia wants to “push through, go headfirst and dig deep in order to make her own way and find her niche.” Marsh Brokerage & Risk Management has already offered her an excellent opportunity which she will begin in August 2020.
Olivia is grateful for receiving a scholarship and support to attend the CPCU and Insurtech Conferences. “Thank you ICT for this honor, I’m looking forward to my future in risk management,” says Olivia.
